The Truth Behind His Death May Never Be Known
At 4:25 a.m. on June 18, 2013, a Mercedes-Benz C250 Coupe crashed at high speed into a palm tree near Hancock Park in Los Angeles. Witnesses reported flames and an explosion erupting from the rear of the vehicle before impact. The engine was hurled more than 50 meters away, and the driver was burned beyond recognition. Fingerprint identification later confirmed that the deceased was Michael Hastings.
Following the incident, a journalist and an MIT doctoral student jointly filed a lawsuit against the FBI, alleging that its investigation of Hastings violated the Freedom of Information Act. The FBI issued a statement denying that it had been investigating him. Local authorities subsequently ruled the death an accident.
However, some automotive experts and counterterrorism security specialists questioned that conclusion. They argued that there was little reason to believe the crash resulted solely from driver error, citing reports that the explosion and fire occurred simultaneously. They also maintained that, for a country with intelligence capabilities as extensive as those of the United States, causing a vehicle malfunction would not be particularly difficult.
