Officer Star: From Combination to Transformation and Release
In BaZi analysis, the Officer Star does not always express itself directly. Its influence often unfolds through a sequence of combination, transformation, and eventual release (if conditions allow). Each stage shaping how authority, career, and responsibility manifest in a person’s life. When the Officer Star is first combined, its original nature may be altered or constrained. Under the right conditions, this combination can transform into a different element, changing its role within the chart. Only when the structure allows it to be released does the Officer Star fully express its function—often bringing visible shifts such as career movement, increased authority, or changes in responsibility.
Understanding this progression is essential, as it determines not just whether the Officer Star is present, but how and when it can truly act.
Bing Shen (丙申) hour pillar
The Hour Pillar of Bing Shen (丙申) in Winston Churchill’s BaZi natal chart is the very soul of the entire chart. Apart from this Bing Shen, none of the other twelve possible hour pillars could match the kind of powerful political structure that Churchill possessed. This Bing Shen (丙申) hour forms a crucial special structure that allows the Bing Officer star (丙官) to remain constantly present in the natal chart even Bing–Xin (丙辛) combined and transformed to become water that suppress fire his Officer star. The Officer star can be released if conditions allow. This is the key configuration that enabled him to devote his life to politics.
The nobility or hardship, success or failure of a person’s destiny is precisely reflected in the BaZi chart. This is an undeniable fact grounded in the Heluo (河洛) theoretical framework upon which Zi Ping astrology is built. Each time we are able to recover the correct Hour Pillar of a chart, it brings a deep sense of realization.
Looking at Churchill’s Luck Pillars: at age 4 he entered Bing Zi (丙子), at 14 Ding Chou (丁丑). The Luck Pillars that reveal Officer and Seven Killings stars had already passed early in life. After entering politics, his life alternated between military and political roles, between civil and martial achievements, and between highs and lows.
Such a precise and intricate set of relationships is perfectly reflected in the rise and fall of his life as different Luck Pillars interact with the natal chart, with auspicious and inauspicious outcomes unfolding in exact correspondence. This demonstrates that the Bing Officer star is indeed irreplaceable.
Ren Wu (壬午) Luck Pillar
During the Ren Wu (壬午) Luck Pillar, the Wu (午) provides additional rooting for the Bing Officer (丙官).
Bing (丙) Fire his Officer star being released
If his original chart did not contain a permanently present Bing Officer star revealed in the Heavenly Stem—and if this Bing Officer were not released after combination and transformation—then such a life trajectory would not have been possible. Furthermore, the chart shows a smooth generative flow from Output (Shang) → Wealth (Cai) → Officer (Guan), and although there is a “Hurting Officer clashes Officer” structure, it is resolved through Wealth acting as an intermediary.
Rules of combination and transformation
At 19:21 on May 10, 1940, according to the rules of combination and transformation, the Bing–Xin (丙辛) combination does not transform into Water nor Metal, but instead transforms into Fire (his Officer star). The Earthly Branches of the Hour and Day—Si (巳) and Xu (戌) on this day—together with the original Xu (戌) and Mao (卯) in the natal chart, combine to form a strong Officer structure. This strengthening of the Officer star corresponds to a promotion or advancement in official rank.
Assuming leadership at 19:21 on May 10, 1940, Churchill was appointed Prime Minister of a coalition government, immediately rejecting suggestions to seek a negotiated peace with Nazi Germany. He refused to negotiate with Hitler, vowed to fight on, and rallied a besieged Britain through iconic speeches and defiance during the Blitz.
