In Zi Ping BaZi (Four Pillars 子平命理) astrology, a chart where the Five Elements are balanced and inclined toward Useful Ten Gods (喜用神) and harmoniously flowing is described with the saying: “When the Five Elements are in harmony, a lifetime will be free of calamity (五行和者,一世無災).” Yet, real-life cases sometimes challenge this assumption.
This case study presents a striking example of a chart that appears structurally sound — with strong and well-supported useful gods — but ultimately resulted in an unexpected and premature death. It highlights an important truth: the natal chart alone is not enough.
Jing’er’s chart structure fits this principle, yet the outcome turned out differently. In fact, BaZi aphorisms often suffer from overgeneralization — do not dismiss them, but do not believe them blindly either.
Why does a chart with balanced Five Elements still encounter misfortune?
“BaZi” consists of two parts: the natal chart (Ming 命) and luck cycles (Yun 運).
- The chart is the body; luck is the usage 命是體,運是用.
- The chart is the host; luck is the guest 命是主,運是客.
- The chart is destined; luck is the variable 命是定數,運是變數.
Why did Jing’er pass away at sixty?
The determining factor lies in how time and luck entered the chart, where the interaction of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches created a new cycle of Five Element and Ten Gods combinations. Changes in strength between favorable and unfavorable elements altered the dynamics of generation and control. The method of “Nine Pillars analysis” is an effective way to observe these transformations.
Few days after her 60th birthday (61 in nominal age according to BaZi), Jing’er suddenly passed away due to acute illness. Her husband, relatives, colleagues, and fellow church members were all shocked and found it hard to accept. Everyone hoped to find a complete explanation.
“Life and death are predestined”
There is no need to search further. In the Analects (Lunyu 論語‧頻淵), Zi Xia (子夏) said: “Life and death are determined by fate; wealth and status are decreed by Heaven (死生有命,富貴在天).”
The meaning is clear: a person’s life, death, wealth, and status are all governed by destiny.
What is “Heaven’s decree”? It is BaZi 天命者,八字也.
During the Spring and Autumn period (春秋時期), sages and philosophers flourished, but the system of understanding destiny through birth time only matured over a thousand years later. It was during the Five Dynasties period that Xu Ziping (徐子平) synthesized earlier knowledge and established the foundations of Zi Ping astrology. Through the logical framework of Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, and Five Element interactions, the mystery of “life and death being predetermined” was gradually unveiled.
through Zi Ping analysis, what Buddhism calls “impermanence” becomes, in a sense, “predictable patterns.
Hidden danger within an apparently favorable chart
Admittedly, Jing’er’s chart does not easily reveal its flaw. On the surface:
- The Useful Ten God (用神 Yong Shen) is strong
- It is neither weak nor exposed
- The Officer is supported by Wealth
- The Resource is protected by the Officer
Everything appears interconnected and supportive. If she had not actually passed away, one might never suspect this chart could indicate early death.
Her death is a fact. But if the natal chart had no inherent structural weakness, and if the luck cycles did not trigger a breaking point, then it would be difficult to retroactively impose a fatalistic interpretation. The reason the chart appears safe is because the harmful factors are deeply hidden.
The mechanism of hidden risk
Even when a BaZi chart appears stable and well-balanced, underlying risks may remain concealed beneath the surface. These hidden factors do not manifest immediately because they are either not exposed or are temporarily restrained within the natal structure. However, once activated by specific timing — through luck cycles or precise combinations of year, month, day, and hour — they can rapidly disrupt the balance and trigger significant consequences. Understanding this mechanism is key to identifying why seemingly favorable charts can still encounter sudden and unexpected outcomes.
We need to identify what the BaZi fears most.

Why earlier luck cycles did not trigger disaster
Although the chart contains hidden risk, earlier luck cycles did not activate it because the critical elements were either restrained, neutralized, or transformed through combinations. As a result, the destructive force was weakened before it could directly damage the useful god or disrupt the overall structure. This shows that the presence of risk alone is not enough — it must align with the right timing conditions to manifest.

Final trigger: Luck cycle and timing
In 2014, she entered the Wu Zi 戊子 luck cycle. This cycle shows:
- Killing star sitting on combination
- Officer/Killing generating Resource
By standard interpretation, this should indicate career success and recognition.
The true cause
At this point, my students will understand the hidden mechanism behind the structural break:
The harmful trigger was not in the major luck cycle, but in the specific timing — the year, month, day, and hour.
Nine Pillars Analysis: Natal Chart and Luck Together 時運命九柱同參
On June 29, 2015 (Ren Wu day of the month, Bing Zi day), Jing’er was sent to the emergency room by her husband. The following day, June 30 (Ding Chou day), before 11 a.m., the doctor informed her husband that Jing’er had passed away.
Hidden danger eventually becomes a fatal threat
If we only examine the major luck (Da Yun) and annual luck (Liu Nian):
- Wu (Earth Officer) in the Heavenly Stem generates Xin (Metal Resource)
- Xin Resource generates Ren (Water Companion)
- Ren further generates two Yi (Wood Output)
- The two Yi (Output) in turn control Wu (Officer)
From this perspective, the conclusion would be: Two Output stars overcoming one Killing star. In Ten Gods interpretation, the Killing star represents the husband and also career. Thus, it might indicate: Marital changes or separation, or Career transition. However, there is no obvious indication of a structural collapse.
Expanding to full timing analysis
When we expand the analysis to include full timing — Four Pillars plus Major Luck, Annual Luck, Monthly Luck, Daily Luck, and Hourly Luck (Five Pillars) —
- Year Pillar: Yi Wei (乙未)
- Month Pillar: Ren Wu (壬午)
- Day Pillar: Ren Yin (壬寅)
- Hour Pillar: Xin Chou (辛丑)
- Wu Zi (戊子 2014-2023) DaYun
- 2015 Yi Wei ( 乙未) year
- 2015 June Ren Wu (壬午) month
- 2015 June 30 Ding Chou (丁丑) day
- 2015 June 30 10:50 AM Yi Si (乙巳) hour
