BaZi and Ten Gods 十神: The Meaning and Their Role in Your Destiny

BaZi: A Deeper Understanding of the Ten Gods 十神

Ten Gods are fundamental concepts that reveal the dynamic relationships between the elements in your chart. Despite the name, the Ten Gods are not literal deities but symbolic representations of different energies and roles that influence your personality, behavior, luck, and life path.

Each “God” corresponds to a specific interaction between the Day Master (your core element) and other elements in your BaZi chart. These interactions help practitioners understand how different aspects of your life—such as wealth, career, relationships, and talents—are shaped by elemental influences.

The Ten Gods (十神 Shi Shen) System

In the Ten Gods system, each pair is distinguished by polarity.
  1. The character (印, 劫, 伤, 财, 官) represents the opposite polarity of the Day Master.

  2. The character (卩, 比, 食, 才, 杀) represents the same polarity as the Day Master.
This distinction helps us identify how each Ten God interacts with your Day Master more precisely and this is used inside our Precise BaZi Calculator.

Mastering the Ten Gods 十神

Mastering the Ten Gods allows you to dive deeper into your BaZi chart, providing insights into your strengths, challenges, and potential opportunities. Throughout this section, we will explore each of the Ten Gods, their meanings, and how they affect your destiny.

Each of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) can relate to your Day Master in two ways — yin or yang polarity, creating a total of ten unique “Gods.”

The favorable vs. hostile nature of the Ten Gods is not fixed; it depends on your Day Master strength and how they interact with your BaZi chart’s structure and current luck cycles.

When a Ten God is Favorable

The Ten Gods bring positive energy and beneficial influences when they are support your favorable and Useful elements. A favorable Ten God strengthens the areas of life it governs, opening doors to growth, success, and harmony. A Ten God is considered favorable when:

  • It strengthens a weak Day Master or weaken a strong Day Master in a favourable way.

  • It controls an excessive element that is hurting the chart’s favourability.

  • It appears at the right time in Luck Pillars or Annual Luck, matching what the chart needs.

  • It works together with other supporting elements, creating beneficial combinations or producing useful outcomes. In short, it improves your BaZi favourability.

For instance, a strong Direct Resource (Zheng Yin) star—representing support, nurturing, and wisdom—can indicate a person who receives help from mentors, enjoys stable learning opportunities, and benefits from emotional resilience. This support helps the Day Master flourish and navigate challenges with confidence.

Similarly, a well-positioned Friend (Bi Jian) star symbolizes helpful friends, allies, and networking opportunities that can boost your career or personal life. It fosters collaboration and shared strength rather than competition.

When a Ten God Turns Hostile

Ten God can become “hostile” or problematic, indicating challenges or conflicts in the related areas of your life. A Ten God becomes hostile when:

  • It further weakens a weak Day Master or overburdens a strong one.

  • It disrupts chart favourability, causing favourable harms.

  • It clashes or harms other useful elements in the chart.

  • It appears in an unfavorable timing within the Luck Pillars or Annual Luck, amplifying existing problems.

For example, if the Seven Killings (Qi Sha) star—which represents authority, aggression, and challenges—is overly strong or uncontrolled, it may manifest as conflicts with authority figures, workplace stress, or impulsive behavior. Instead of motivating you positively, this energy can create tension and obstacles.

Similarly, an excessive presence of Direct Wealth (Zheng Cai) might suggest financial ups and downs, overspending, or risky investments rather than steady income and wealth accumulation.

If your Day Master is already overly strong (but unable to “Follow 从”) and doesn’t need more Friends (比肩) or Rob Wealth (劫财), the arrival of these gods in a luck cycle could create rivalry, financial loss, or stubbornness — turning them into hostile forces.

How to Use the Ten Gods in Chart Reading:

The Ten Gods are powerful tools in BaZi chart reading because they reveal the complex interplay of energies that shape your life. To effectively use the Ten Gods in interpreting a BaZi chart, consider the following steps:
  1. Day Master is the anchor — every other stem/branch is judged by how it relates to it.

The Day Master represents your core self—the elemental energy of the day pillar’s heavenly stem. All other elements and Ten Gods are understood relative to this Day Master.

  2. Determine the Relationship Between the Day Master and Other Elements

Each of the other stems and branches in your chart interacts with your Day Master through five elemental relationships (producing, controlling, being produced, being controlled, or same element). These relationships define the Ten Gods. Refer to the above table.

  3. Analyze Each Ten God’s Meaning

Every Ten God corresponds to a particular role or energy, such as Wealth, Power, Resource, or Output. Understanding these meanings helps you interpret how different parts of your life are influenced. For example, “Direct Wealth” often relates to financial matters, while “Indirect Resource” might reflect support and learning.

  4. Evaluate Strength and Balance

The strength of your Day Master and the presence of supporting or conflicting Ten Gods affect your chart’s balance. A well-balanced chart indicates smooth life flows, while imbalances may highlight challenges or growth areas.

The balance (or dominance) of certain Gods shows what role or theme dominates your life — e.g. heavy Indirect Wealth may indicate risk-taking or business savvy, while strong Direct Officer suggests discipline and compliance with authority.

  5. Each God has positive and negative expressions, depending on:

    • Elemental strength

    • Chart structure

    • Presence of combinations/clashes

  6. Contextualize with Life Areas

Map each Ten God to relevant life domains—career, relationships, health, and personal development. This contextual understanding allows you to give practical advice or predictions based on the chart.

  7. Combine with Other BaZi Elements

Use the Ten Gods alongside other chart components, such as the 12 Earthly Branches, luck pillars, and seasonal influences, to get a comprehensive and nuanced reading.

The Ten Gods 十神 play a crucial role in unlocking the deeper layers of your BaZi chart, providing vital insights into your character, life challenges, and opportunities.
