The Ten Gods (十神 Shi Shen) System

A complete BaZi must have all combinations and transformations of the Ten Gods (十神 Shi Shen), forming the foundation of BaZi analysis. Each ‘God’ reflects how your Day Master interacts with other elements, revealing how wealth, career, relationships, and talents are influenced in your BaZi chart.

Each Ten God has a Yin and Yang aspect, which determines its polarity relative to the Day Master.

Ten Gods - Combination (合 He), Union (會 Hui), and Transformation Are the "Soul" of BaZi Analysis

In BaZi analysis, the true "soul" of the system lies in the interactions of Combination (合 He), Union (會 Hui), and Transformation—whether a combination successfully transforms (成化 Cheng Hua) or fails to transform (不化 Bu Hua). These interactions determine how the Ten Gods and Five Elements evolve, often causing fundamental structural changes within a chart.

Such transformations, driven by the relationships between the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, can redefine the strength of the chart, alter favourable and unfavourable elements, and ultimately change the interpretation of a person's destiny.

For example, Direct Wealth (正财 Zheng Cai – 财) may transform into Rob Wealth (劫财 Jie Cai – 劫), turning an indication of wealth accumulation into one of financial loss or increased competition for money. Likewise, Direct Resource (正印 Zheng Yin – 印) may transform into Hurting Officer (伤官 Shang Guan – 伤), causing what initially appears to be a sound investment or beneficial support to become a source of problems instead.

Without correctly understanding these combinations, unions, and transformations (when successfully transforms or fails to transform), a BaZi reading can easily reach the wrong conclusion, even if the original chart structure appears to be interpreted correctly.

Combination (合 He), Clash (剋 Ke), Punishment (刑 Xing), and Conflict (沖 Chong) are the four fundamental interaction patterns in traditional Chinese metaphysics and Chinese Zodiac compatibility analysis. They describe how the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches interact through combination, control, punishment, and collision, and are widely used to assess a person's fortune, life events, relationship compatibility, and marriage prospects.

When analysing a person's BaZi chart or the compatibility between two Zodiac signs, these four interactions rarely exist in isolation. Multiple interactions may occur simultaneously. For example, a chart may contain both combinations and clashes.

The same combination may carry a different meaning if it occurs in another palace, demonstrating why both the interaction itself and its position within the chart must be considered.
