Feng Shui: Coffin Position in Upper-Floor Bedrooms

After reading your answer about the bed facing the door and the coffin position, I have a further concern and hope Master can provide some guidance. Let’s say I live in a two-story house where the main door downstairs faces north, and the bedroom door upstairs faces south. If my bed in this bedroom is positioned with the legs facing north, the same direction as the main door downstairs, is this still considered bad?

Thanks a lot.

Does It Apply to Upper-Floor Bedrooms?

The traditional Feng Shui concept of the “coffin position” (脚冲门, or “feet pointing toward the door”) generally refers to a bed with the feet pointing directly toward the door of the same room, because it resembles how the deceased are carried out of a house—feet first.

In your case:
  • Main door (downstairs) faces North

  • Bedroom door (upstairs) faces South

  • Bed inside the bedroom has feet pointing North (same direction as main door)
This situation is not considered the classic coffin position because:
  1. The feet are not pointing toward your bedroom door, which is the primary concern.

  2. Feng Shui issues are generally assessed within the same room first, not across floors.

Why the main door direction doesn’t matter much here

The energy flow affecting your rest is mainly influenced by the bedroom layout, not the orientation of the main door downstairs. Having your bed aligned in the same compass direction as the main door is not inherently negative unless for example:
  1. The bed is directly above the main door, which can create instability in energy.

  2. There is a strong energy path (Qi flow) from the main door up the staircase to your bed (which is rare unless there’s a straight staircase and open door alignment).
Practical Advice:
  1. Ensure your bed is not directly aligned with your bedroom door.

  2. If the bed happens to be above the main door, consider adding a thick rug under the bed or a strong flooring layer to stabilize energy. If you want extra protection, place a low bench or soft rug at the foot of the bed to “slow down” Qi.
