Question Date: 16/8/2025
Is it bad if my bed faces the bedroom door of the house?

People say this is the Coffin Position, but coffins are only carried out through the main door downstairs. I’m staying in a two-storey house.

If my bed faces the upstairs bedroom door, is it still the Coffin Position?

Feng Shui: Why Is Sleeping Facing a Door Considered Unlucky?

Yes, it is still considered unfavorable. The original idea came from funeral customs, where a coffin is carried feet-first out of the main door. However, Feng Shui also looks at Qi flow and symbolism. Even upstairs, if your feet point directly at the bedroom door, you are lying in the path of rushing Qi. This can disturb sleep, reduce privacy, and weaken health over time.

The “coffin position” taboo originally came from funeral customs:
  • The coffin is placed in the living room (downstairs),

  • Then carried feet-first out of the main door.

  • So the symbolism of feet → door → death became ingrained in Feng Shui teachings.

Why it still applies upstairs Even though upstairs bedrooms

Since upstairs are never used for carrying out coffins, the saying persisted because:
  • Qi logic
→ Energy enters and exits through any door. If your feet point straight at the bedroom door, you’re lying in the path of rushing Qi, which disturbs rest (health/peace issue, not just funeral symbolism).

  • Cultural simplification
→ Over time, people generalized the rule to “never sleep with feet facing any door” to avoid bad symbolism and discomfort.

  • Practical
→ With feet to the door, you’re visible immediately when someone enters. That lack of privacy creates a subconscious feeling of weakness, which ties back to Feng Shui’s idea of support and security.
So you’re right: the funeral logic is only relevant to the main door downstairs, but the Qi flow and privacy logic applies to any bedroom door. That’s why modern Feng Shui masters still advise against feet-to-door upstairs.
So is it “real” Feng Shui?

Yes — it’s a genuine Feng Shui concept based on Qi flow and the command position, not just myth. But people sometimes oversimplify it into a superstition, when in fact the advice is about balance, comfort, and energy flow.

Remedies if You Can’t Avoid It
  1. Shift bed position so it’s diagonal to the door (ideal).

  2. Use a footboard, low screen, or rug near the door to slow down Qi before it hits you.

  3. Keep the door closed at night — reduces the direct Qi flow.
