What does 坐北向南 mean? North-South Facing? Older people often advise buying a house with this type of facing.

Is it true that this facing is always better?

Feng Shui (风水) “坐北向南” literally means the house sits on the north and faces the south


The short answer: No, 坐北向南 (north-back, south-facing) is not always better for everyone.

Why older people like “坐北向南”?


1. Good Sunlight

In China and most of Asia (Northern Hemisphere), south-facing homes get plenty of sunlight in winter and stay cooler in summer.

This makes the home brighter, warmer, and healthier.

2. Traditional Feng Shui

“南向为阳” → Facing south connects the house with yang energy (sunlight, warmth, prosperity).

The back (north) protects against cold winter winds.

3. Ventilation & Comfort

Natural airflow is better in houses facing south, especially in older times before air-conditioning.

4. Cultural Symbolism

In ancient China, emperors sat facing south when holding court (南面而坐), symbolizing rulership, nobility, and harmony with nature.

South-facing can be favorable, but it’s not the only good direction.
