Dear Master,

I heard the a "Widow Month" or "Widow Year" is bad for marriage?

Could you please enlighten me?

The term "Widow Month" ("Widow Days" or "Widow Year") is used in traditional Chinese beliefs and customs


It has been used especially in relation to marriage timing, and carries a negative or inauspicious connotation.

Meaning of a Widow Month


A "Widow Month" refers to a lunar month without a spring beginning (立春 Lìchun) — the solar term that marks the start of spring in the Chinese calendar. When a lunar year (not just a month) does not contain any Lìchun, the entire year is called a "Widow Year" (寡妇年 GuaFu Nian) or "Blind Year" (盲年 Mang Nian), which is more commonly used.

However, in more folk usage, sometimes people refer to certain lunar months — especially those associated with Yin energies, death, or mourning — as "Widow Months", meaning months that are unlucky for marriage.

In BaZi and Feng Shui context


Widow Month is not an official BaZi term, but it is sometimes used in folk calendars or almanacs (通勝 Tong Sheng / 通书 Tong Shu) to indicate months that are inauspicious for weddings, especially for women, as the name implies potential widowhood.

It reflects a belief that marrying in this period may lead to separation, loss, or disharmony.

My advice

If someone tells you a certain month is a "Widow Month", it's usually based on:

- Traditional almanac taboos

- Cultural superstition

- Sometimes Lunar July (the Ghost Month) is confused with it due to its yin energy

If you're planning a wedding and concerned about dates, it's more accurate to:

- Check your BaZi

- Check the Tong Shu (Chinese Almanac) for auspicious days

- Use BaZi date selection (择日) based on both partners' birth charts
