BaZi Four Pillars of Destiny - The concept of Useful God. Part 1.

What we seek in our Bazi Four Pillars of Destiny is to assure smooth flow of Qi in a structure (provided that the it is available in the BaZi chart), the element that is best equipped to do that may then be referred to as Useful God, or Yòng Shén 用神.

Yong Shén 用神 is the most sought after god or deity in one’s BaZi chart, as opposed to the least wanted deity Jì Shén 忌神, which will instead ‘attack’ or ‘obstruct’ a life and which will be referred to as Annoying God.

The element needed most in a life may therefore not at all be the lacking element, but the lacking element may instead be the most unfavorable element, i.e. the element that bring the most obstacles to your life. It is very well possible that the lacking element in a person’s chart would also be his Annoying God.

In Bazi we want the Daymaster to success and to perform so that we can steadily progress and make some achievements. A life may come with much lesser opportunities and continuous challenges when the BaZi Four Pillar of Destiny by itself does not produce the Useful God. If the Useful God is not produced from within the actual Four Pillars of Destiny, then most probably your chart is having Ji Shen the Annoying Gods in some strong positions.

Yòng 用 in Chinese it means use, useful.

Jì 忌 in Chinese it means fear or envy.

Shén 神 in Chinese it means God or deity

Form this perspective of the Useful God principle, balance in the chart itself may not be the most important in our BaZi, but rather smooth but definite flow of Qi is most essential for a life. The Useful God is to ensure smooth flow of Qi and a good prosper life and it becomes imperative to be able to unmistakably identify the Useful God.

If Fire was identified as the Useful God – and provided it is supported by the Bazi structure -, Fire will then can refer them as your useful god.

Rather than seeking conventional balance, balance in a Bazi should points to the function of identifying the defect in a BaZi chart and finding ways to go around this defect, so that eventually its obstructing properties will have been made as not functioning.

Even if we cannot locate the Useful God in our Bazi, we may try to create it by releasing the temperament and behavior associated with the desired element from inside ourselves and still aim to accomplish in life. This is what we called human personality. If you know your persoanlity and willing to change for better you will be more successful.

For example, if you found out that your BaZi shows a very strong signal that you are not willing to listen and this is bad for you and the chances that your are going to make the wrong decision are high but you still prefer to only listen to yourself and think you are always right, I am afraid no one can help you. On the other hand, if you can listen to others (the more the better) and try to digest what others said, you are on your path to success.
